The problem with this show is, whenever there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for something, they still don't think it's necessary to inform the public about it. That, too, is a form of discrimination. And this really looks annoying.
I'd be willing to eat my indignation if a plausible reason surfaced, but I agree. It does look really annoying.
Also, you'd think the person at Universal would take a little more time and sincerity with an email on this issue coming from a reporter from AfterElton.com. That's just good business sense.
Oh, that's just great. I can't believe they're doing this and in a way that's so obvious! I didn't really like The face of the enemy but it has to be in the pack.
The thing is it's kinda weird that they didn't have any problems including Razor on Season 3, right? I know they don't even kiss but it's not that different, is it?
I already wasn't happy with the look of the pack and now this.
the worst thing is that gaeta was essentially only gay in the webisodes. without that story, he barely any connection at all with hoshi, let alone a romantic one. PLUS the webisodes are really the only place where we can see just what made him flip his frakkin lid!
from a narrative stand point this is just...insane.
Yes, I agree. Alessandro Juliani himself said in an interview, he wished he'd known about Gaeta's relationship with Hoshi while they were still filming the series because him and Brad Dryborough (Hoshi) could have at least put in some nuances (if not any actual lines) about being in a relationship, nuances that would have added a more interesting dimension to the last episodes of the series. He was worried that having Gaeta revealed as gay in the webisodes seemed token, and he said that writer Jane Espenson convinced him that there was a certain grace in such an offhand reveal. But now, whatever they intended, it makes the whole thing look even more like what it looked like at the time the webisodes were released - that they were uncomfortable with it being very visible.
I'm totally ticked, and a little surprised. I mean, I know the Streamys aren't exactly prestigious awards at this point, but Face of the Enemy cleaned up in them. Well, the drama side, anyway :)
Over on the SciFi website, someone offered the explanation that it might have to do with the fact that these were written after the writers' strike, and something about the change in contract might have made it financially prohibitive. It's a theory only, but I'd kind of believe it.
Either way, it pisses me off. I don't think they're cutting it because it's OMG gay! (at least, I hope not), but once again, poor Gaeta's getting the shaft. ::sigh:: I really think the webisodes are essential to understanding what he does (although probably not for the reasons the writers intended), and without them... argh.
You know, the sad thing, if it IS the fact that there's a gay relationship in it, is that for a hack job at giving Felix a life, the relationship is so tastefully done... (aside from the kiss in the Raptor with the Eight, which still burns me up because I think it's horribly out of character, unless the person tempting him was Gaius) UGH. Not to mention that the webisodes actually gave Hoshi a character.
My desire to own 4.5 dropped a bit after this news.
It might very well be that they're not cutting it because it's OMG gay! as you say. But a little sensitivity to the fact that it might come across that way would have been nice. I mean, that letter from Universal to that AfterElton.com guy couldn't have been more "frak you, now fork over $350 bucks, sci-fi geek, because we know you won't be able to stop yourself" if it tried.
They bothered making those webisodes not to make Gaeta gay but because they felt they needed to explain why Gaeta turned on Adama. So why leave that explanation out of the story now, you know?
I was really looking forward to having the webisodes on DVD. *sigh*
aside from the blatant asshandedness of "sweeping" gays under the rug in the 'verse by introducing this truth about Gaeta in webisodes, it's also a crime to not include one of the MAJOR reason for the coup attempt which can only be seen in the webisodes!
Otherwise the rationale Gaeta has is too general. We'd never learn what Baltar said, we'd never learn that Gaeta is not just gay but possible bi (given that he was somewhat interested in the 8 that screwed him...literally)This was a major turning point for a beloved character who has been loyal and put up with alot of prejudice for his role in the government of New Caprica.
That's true! I forgot that! It went a long way for me in explaining Gaeta's mindset when I saw that. That Gaeta would go to such lengths to shield himself from learning the horrible truth about himself was quite the revelation. It also cast a really interesting new light on his character and the mutiny arc, which I saw in part as Gaeta trying to make up for his blindness.
Well of course they wouldn't be on there. It's not like he's a main character or a good guy. And before the Razor rebuttal hits, who wants to see a gay GUY? Scifi watchers would much rather have two hot ladies than two dudes. It's science.
Pffft, the only interesting characters are main characters. Were you not paying attention during the mutiny arc? Felix = bad = not worth anyone's time/not worth DVD space.
I have a feeling this is more about the writer's strike and the fact that the webisodes (or so I've heard) fall into a really iffy place as far as ownership and rights to content go.
Still, it certainly looks unfortunate, doesn't it? You'd think they'd at least want to to clear that up a little better.
And once again, poor Felix is getting the shaft regardless :/
Yeah, I wondered about the writer's strike too, but from what I understand, the webisodes were made long after the writer's strike ended. One must assume the paying-for-web-content issue must have been resolved if the strikers went back to work. They were filming FOTE after they'd already broken down the CIC set, which is why CIC looks so weird in the webisodes. Galactica's situation room is standing in for CIC. So they should have had plenty of time to do all the legal clearances, I'd think.
Poor Felix *is* getting the shaft!
Apropos of nothing: HI! Long time no chat. Good to hear from you.
Well, was there any other web content that got involved? I remember hearing that there was some web content released about New Caprica or something during the writer's strike, but I could have been wrong.
Honestly I think it seems single-minded to jump to discrimination against gays as the very first thought. I had understood that the writer's strike was primarily about how to pay writers for web content, and maybe it was just complicated to release them in physical form.
It also seems single-minded of that author to decide not to buy the show just because the gay content isn't on the disk. If that was the only part of the show that he could bring himself to enjoy... I don't know. I loved the webisodes, they were great, but their exclusion isn't keeping me from being interested in the pretty box set because I've been illegally downloading the show for a while and I'd like to make good on owning it.
Well, the webisodes were the very last thing ever filmed of BSG, even later than "The Plan." So they should have had plenty of time to get clearances taken care of. Also, it was filmed long after the writer's strike, so I have trouble seeing how that could be a factor. I assume the writers got what they wanted re: web content, since they went back to work and didn't complain about it.
I don't know what to think. But it does look insensitive at any rate.
I guess so. I'd like to see whether The Resistance webisodes will be included as well (my guess is no). Before anyone makes any allegations of prejudice, though, I need that data.
I would have wondered if they were done in lower quality, but I recall they did get broadcast on the channel. They're also all still up on the website, though, so maybe SciFi wants everyone to have to go through their advertising for the content. They seem to take down episodes frequently enough that it makes sense to sell them, but the webisodes are still hanging out there (and they're up on Hulu as well, while almost all of the regular episodes are not available on Hulu- only the last seven episodes and the specials/webisodes.) I wonder if they thought it wasn't worth packaging that content on the DVDs because it is still available online for free, and will always be available online for free.
Well, I hear your point about the Resistance webisodes. I did try to find that out, actually, doing a (well, cursory) search on the net about the box set release. Nothing I saw on the official site mentioned either webisode series being on there, but then I did see an Amazon reviewer who claimed both were on there. But then they necessarily don't know anything.
You provide some convincing circumstantial evidence (the Hulu thing) for the decision being to not include any web content, maybe because it would cost them extra money in licensing fees they didn't want to spend? Maybe Universal they decided it wasn't worth the money because they've never seen them and don't think of them as an integral part of the show? However, by keeping them on sites like the SciFi.com and Hulu, Universal *would* still have to pay residuals to the writers of the webisodes, so IDK if that makes sense either.
Uninformed conclusion: It's just weird and annoying.
I did and I called and the guy on the other end was like, "I can't find this reservation or the other one, please call back tomorrow when the actual guy is in" and I figured I should wait to reply until I'd actually made the transfer. So I should go do that now.
Maybe that's a better deal for the writers of the webisodes, and hence part of the deal? If they keep getting residuals, as opposed to (would this ever happen?) getting a cut of box sales. I don't know much about how this stuff works, so my conclusions are a little uninformed.
Yeah, I agree about it being annoying. It would be pretty nice to have it all on a shiny little disk with the podcast track and stuff. Even my mom liked the podcast for those and she never listens to special feature stuff.
I did and I called and the guy on the other end was like, "I can't find this reservation or the other one, please call back tomorrow when the actual guy is in"
Oh, that's frustrating. Well, let me know if you have any more problems and I'll do whatever I can to help straighten it out. The only thing I can think of that might have gone wrong on my end is if maybe I transposed the reservation number or something like that. Or maybe they assigned it a new reservation number when I changed the name. But they didn't give me a new number, so IDK. But again, I'll be happy to help straighten it out, if necessary.
I seriously may not bother with the 4.5 DVDs now. I have all the episodes downloaded and burned to disk so the extras were the main reason I wanted to own it. And I'd have thought the Gaetasodes would be top of the list of any essential extras to feature on a 4.5 release. What ARE they featuring as extras if not the Gaetasodes? What could be more important in terms of DVD space? Additional show material is more vital to fans than deleted scenes, making ofs and bloopers. What about fans from other countries who haven't been able to watch the Gaetasodes online?!
I hope there is a non-stupid explanation but for Gaeta fans to loss such an essential piece of his storytelling is a big frustration. Plus, AJ and Jane really did some great work on those little sodes. They deserve to be seen!
Yeah, I was looking forward to all the deleted scenes I've heard about from the mutiny arc. I really don't get it. And you bring up a good point about the folks in other countries who never got to see the webisodes.
If I was AJ, I'd be kind of annoyed. He got booted off the show just before the end, so he didn't get the fun of being part of the finale, then they called him back to make these webisodes. I know he got to interact with Grace, Hogan, and Brad, but overall, it must have felt a bit weird and lonely to be doing this stuff with all the sets broken down around him. And then to have the show send the message that the work he did wasn't even worth being part of the documented version of the show?
I've heard him talk about it in interviews and he was very humble and grateful about making the webisodes and about going out with a whimper like that. Maybe he's a better person than me, but I'd be really rather ticked.
