Watching one of my new favorite shows tonight, Battlestar Galactica, I saw an ad for a Sci Fi original movie that I thought surely was a joke, but as the ad ended with no punchline, I became horrified and darkly amused all at the same to realize those folks at the Sci Fi Channel have utterly lost their minds.

The title says it all:

"MANSQUITO"

I'm not kidding.

My roommates and I have been eagerly awaiting that movie since last summer. I'm completely serious. I can't wait!!

Hmmm....

Ok, I'm willing to admit that I'm totally pre-judging on first glance, so I may be missing something, in which case I'm really curious to hear about why you and your friends are expecting it to be a great movie.

Or is there a strong sense of irony in your several-month anticipation?

I just love shitty movies, and that love has rubbed off on my roommates. That one had an immediately gratifying title, and really, what's scarier than a gigantic mosquito? Lots of things, I guess.

(This love of shitty movies has actually caused us to come up with ideas to develop ourselves - maybe one day, we'll sell a script for our movie "'Dactyl" and its sequel, "Terror Dactyl" to the SciFi channel. They can't be worse than most of the movies they show!)

"Terror Dacytl!" At least it's got a good pun involved. ;)

Seriously, we have to invite you and Deborah to our next Bad Movie Night, in which we find the absolute worst possible films we can find and screen them with friends to much amusement and backtalking to the screen.

For example, one of our recent screenings included "Incubus" an Italian 1960s vampire movie starring William Shatner and a whole bunch of B-movie Italians. The movie was in Esperanto (I shit you not...) without subtitles. Then there was the blaxploitation movie starring Sun Ra. You guys should come to the next one.

There was actually a whole article in Wired about these kinds of movies they make. They're trying to recreate the feel of the old 50's style monster movies. Found the full text if your interested: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.10/scifi.html

You're awesome

Thanks. That was interesting. Btw, are we on for Friday? Do you want to try and work in any other days, like Saturday or Sunday in Northampton?

Great. So the folks at SciFi are having fun creating their own deliberately cheesy horror films. Why did they have to cancel a good program like FarScape?
