BSG SECRET HOBBIES CHALLENGE

Photobucket

From bungee jumping to stamp collecting to needlework, everybody's got a hobby so why not your most beloved BSG 'verse characters too? Write us a 100-word drabble or make some art and reveal their secret hobbies to the world. These revelations can be surprising, funny, even poignant. There are no rules.

Well, actually, there are rules. But they're few and they're simple:

  1. Drabbles should be 100 words or less

  2. We have no problem with porn, if you can make it work, but it should be clear that kinks don't count as hobbies.

  3. Art can be original or photoshopped art, or even creative photos involving action figures.

  4. Crossovers are allowed if you can somehow get a crossover and a hobby across in 100 words. We say, go for it!

  5. The Caprica 'verse is considered part of the BSG 'verse. You don't need to mention the BSG characters at all if you're using Caprica characters.

  6. Post your contribution in a comment to this post. One comment for each contribution.

  7. Put the main character and – if necessary – warnings in the subject line of the comment.

  8. Crosspost as much as you like!

  9. This challenge is open through January 6, 2011

If you're confused now, here are some examples:

Tigh, no warnings

The tiny scissors flew across the quarters and into the wall, with a satisfying air of violence.

Saul turned back to the bare, misshapen lump of miniature leaves, branches and dirt before him. What the hell? He'd taken out a Centurion with his bare hands once.

He should be able to trim a damn bonsai plant.

“Are you using a lawnmower on that thing or what?” Bill quipped as he walked in.

“Yeah, I don't give a frak what Cottle says about this being relaxing,” Saul growled. “I'm going back to the ambrosia.”

Baltar, no warnings

After New Caprica, Felix found the sketchbook amongst Baltar's notes. He just stared at it for a moment, hot fury boiling up.

On the opened page, one very enraged, very tiny Tigh was chasing a manically laughing Starbuck through the CIC. Air Rage, the caricature's caption said.

“Ah, you know,” Baltar had said, unusually bashful, when Felix had first found it. “You start doodling in first semester. Two doctorates later... well.”

He'd thought it was so cute.

Before he could help it, Felix grabbed the sketchbook and hurtled it into a corner.

Nothing about it had ever been cute.

Adama - no warnings

Date: 2010-12-26 04:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] millari.livejournal.com
Gaeta's eyes went agog as the pixels of the photo resolved themselves.

He never should have checked his personal email on duty.

“Commander in CIC!”

He swore under his breath and closed the window hastily. He barely kept a straight face as Adama paused at the DRADIS. He held his breath as utterly inconvenient images of a tanned young man on a beach with rippling pecs invaded his mind.

“What's up with you?” Dee demanded.

Gaeta stared wordlessly at the Commander's retreating back. He turned to Dee, eyes wide.

“Did you know the Old Man was a surfer once?”

Hot Dog, no warnings

Date: 2010-12-26 05:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] trovia.livejournal.com
The conversation took place on a lazy evening when a handful of pilots were relaxing in the rec room after duty.

Racetrack was the one to speak first, moodily playing with her glass of knuckledraggers' brew. “You know what I miss the most?” she said. “Chocolate cake. Huge towers of chocolate cake with yellow frosting on top.”

“Music,” Skulls said. “Rock bands and Aquarian drums.”

“Dawn on a Caprican beach,” Helo said, sighing.

“Springboard diving,” Hot Dog said.

Everybody turned to stare at him.

“What?” he said defensively. “It's a hobby.”

Lee, no warnings

Date: 2010-12-26 08:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] acsgrlie.livejournal.com
This is my first BSG fic. Ever. Be kind :)

The moment Lee made contact he knew it was a mistake.

“You cut across too fast. You gotta take your time and go easy.”

“I know, dad. Today’s just not my day.”

Lee took out a 7-iron and made his way into the artificial woods under the blaze of the artificial sun on Cloud 9.

‘You gotta admit being out here does feel good,’ thought Bill as he waited for Lee to make his shot.

“Frak!” yelled Lee as he heard the ball crack the nearest tree.

“Why do you play this game anyway Lee?”

“It relaxes me.”

Athena and Helo, no warnings

Date: 2010-12-26 08:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] geekbynight.livejournal.com
Helo couldn’t figure out why Sharon insisted on doing their laundry. They racked up about the same amount on Raptor runs.

At first, he thought it might be a subtle critique of his cleaning abilities.

Once Hera came back he thought it would change. It didn’t; finally, Helo followed her to the washing barracks.

Racetrack was whispering something to her and Sharon gave Skulls a playful shove as he exited the room. Skulls swore, nearly tripping over his feet, but there was a smile on his face. And then Helo understood, completely.

He never bothered her about the laundry again.

Umm, I wasn't sure if this counted as a hobby or not :/

Boomer, Mathias, no warnings

Date: 2010-12-26 11:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] geekbynight.livejournal.com
She’d started after Athena as she walked away only to end up staring down the barrel of a gun.

“Where do you think you’re going?” A female marine barked, “We don’t just let any toaster walk around here.”

Boomer blinked, “Gunny, it’s me. Boomer, we used to play paintball on R&R time with the bridge bunnies.” She held her hands open.

“No,” Mathias snapped, gripping her gun, “I’d never play paintball with you ever.”

Boomer shook her head, eyes following the path Athena had taken. It was a lost cause, she ought to know that by now.

She’d been replaced.

Tamara Adama, no warnings

Date: 2010-12-27 01:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] geekbynight.livejournal.com
Players treated her like a goddess here. Three weeks after moving into an apartment, Tamara wandered home to find two women with machine guns and a painted “T” on their forehead guarding her front door.

They looked at her like the priests did at their altars on Tauron. She let them stay.

She missed a lot of things about living. One thing Tamara missed most was play pyramid with her friends after school. No one in New Cap City was interested in that.

The she was offered a chance to hurt people. Make someone pay. Before long she was hooked.

Baltar - no warnings

Date: 2010-12-27 02:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] millari.livejournal.com
Felix gaped at the yellowed newspaper clipping he'd just found stuffed inside a book on Gaius' bookshelf.

“Gaius, this is you, isn't it?”

The photo was unmistakable: a pre-pubescent Gaius Baltar in overalls and straw hat, posing proudly with a giant, blue-ribboned carrot, next to an older man who shared both his resemblance and his fashion sense.

“Give me that!” Gaius snatched at it in dismay. A shit-eating grin unfurled across Felix's face.

Gaius' expression, meanwhile, could have cut diamonds.

“Not a word, Felix,” he warned. “Not one word..”

"Yarn?"

"You're nice enough, I'll knit you a scarf," replied Cottle as he walked by. She'd have never guessed.

"What, no Volume 5?" asked Felix.

"Are you kidding? That was one of the rarest comic books out there even before the cylons attacked," said Helo.

Lee, Ellen - no warnings

Date: 2010-12-29 04:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] trovia.livejournal.com
There were many activities that Lee feared Ellen could be engaging in one day when he'd enter her quarters. He had to be fearless to be a fighter pilot, yet some gave him nightmares. Still, this one... this one he hadn't seen coming.

Ellen smiled when she saw him in the hatchway, slyly making sure to graze his chest on her way out.

“Knitting has been a venerable activity of admirals' wives for ages, you know,” she remarked, her lips too close to his ear.

“It helps keeping my fingers limber.”

Winking at him, she left the room.

Leoben - no warnings

Date: 2010-12-29 04:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] trovia.livejournal.com
The bookstore was bathed in warm beams of sunlight, peaceful and quiet, as if the owner could be back any minute. Dust had barely started settling on the shelves; the Attacks hadn't touched this place, and no Centurion had marred it later.

Taking “Quiet Your Mind, Change Your Life” off the shelf and placing it on top of “Daily Reflections on the Path of Yoga,” Leoben carefully lifted the stash of books and turned to leave.

He smiled serenely. If “Six Essential Practices to Cultivate Enlightenment (With Earbuds)” wouldn't help him find the Way, nothing ever would.

Re: Leoben - no warnings

What I love about this is that it is so determinedly, even disturbingly serene. I just picture Leoben reading excerpts of these books to himself on New Caprica, before he goes off to do more nasty things to humans. He probably repeats lines from these books like little mantras.

Great choice for Leoben!

Narcho, Showboat, Hoshi- no warnings

Date: 2010-12-30 09:20 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lls-mutant.livejournal.com
The song was something about rain. Felix listened to it idly, sipping his drink. Narcho had a good voice, even if it was a bit coarse, and could actually play the guitar. He'd had no idea Showboat was such a drummer. And Louis playing the bass was just hot. His foot was tapping, until he saw Starbuck frowning.

"It's just a song," he leaned close enough to hear Helo saying.

"Yeah, right," Kara muttered.

But as the band launched into the refrain, Felix had to agree that Kara might have a point.

I belong in the service of the queen…

Lee Adama, no warnings

Date: 2011-01-02 07:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lls-mutant.livejournal.com
Lee wanted to peek out between the curtains to see if his family there, but at nineteen he should be beyond that. He stomped down on the impulse and began stretching. Looking wouldn't tell him how often Larry had to pinch Zac awake anyway.

The orchestra was warming up, and the excitement thrummed in his veins. Hours of rehearsal and work, all for this. He smirked, and then snapped his unitard into place. He knelt and adjusted his shoe, and then got back to his feet.

He held his arms out, poised on his toes, and waited for his cue.

This is wonderful! I like how Lee feels confident here (despite barely being able to resist looking out the curtain to see if his family was there). And I liked the presence of great-uncle-in-law Larry too.

I bet Lee was very skilled at this. He would bring his A game to this just like any other education or hobby.

Great choice! Glad you're still contributing to this challenge.

Star Trek/BSG - Racetrack, Skulls - no warnings

Date: 2011-01-03 12:37 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] trovia.livejournal.com
*I* can get a crossover and a (new) hobby into 100 words! Also I was really inspired by my new icon. ;)

---

It started with holodecks.

Actually, it started with Racetrack and Skulls finding Earth. Because if anybody would.

Naturally, they were beamed onto a Starfleet ship before they could as much as panic. Numerous interrogations later, they found themselves free to walk the ship. Overwhelmed, they found the bar, booze calling out to them. Except.

Doom came with one friendly, “No, we don’t have ethanol or brothels. We have holodecks.”

One explanation and one thorough personal inspection later, Skulls said, “Come on. We’ve gotta jump back to the Fleet.”

It ended with Racetrack saying, “Who?” in a daze, without turning around.
From: [identity profile] millari.livejournal.com
LOL. Go Racetrack!

Actually, it started with Racetrack and Skulls finding Earth. Because if anybody would.

THIS IS TOTALLY TRUE.

Doom came with one friendly, “No, we don’t have ethanol or brothels. We have holodecks.”

I can totally picture how their faces fell when they heard this. :D

Also, your icon is so much win, and I don't even know for sure who those two are. Is that O'Brien and Bashir??? Are they in a teepee? A Zeppelin? WTF?

Laura Roslin, no warnings

Date: 2011-01-03 12:41 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lorrainemarker.livejournal.com
It was always Galley Three. Over two months, the unknown perpetrator had left gingerbread, chocolate chip cookies, three batches of cupcakes, a three tier chocolate cake, and a batch of pecan sweet rolls. It wasn’t something to set guards over, but it was curious. Adama had noted a peculiar pattern.

“Madame President, I didn’t know you cooked.”

Laura jumped and gave him a slightly guilty look. “I don’t cook. I bake. If it doesn’t have sugar in it, I’ve no idea how to make it. What gave me away?”

“It’s always the night before your doloxen treatments.”

“Baking relaxes me.”

Hoshi & Gaeta, no warnings

Date: 2011-01-03 01:12 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lorrainemarker.livejournal.com

The laptop was contraband. Louis had removed the wireless card, but Adama would have conniptions over it even existing. Louis didn’t care. There was little enough left for them to enjoy. He was keeping this.

Louis sat back in the rack, Felix between his legs, back resting against his chest. He closed the curtains shutting out reality. Louis hugged Felix closer and clicked ‘play’.

They fled into movies with wizards, warriors, unicorns, swords, and magic; where heroes always won; good always prevailed. For two hours each night, they lived in worlds where hope still existed; worlds never touched by Cylons.

Skulls, no warnings

Date: 2011-01-03 01:49 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lorrainemarker.livejournal.com

Bundles of embroidery floss, carefully untwisted from six strands and rewound on plastic skeins in two strand batches lined the top tray of the box. A small tube held tapestry needles of various sizes. Lifting the tray revealed a layer of hoops, patterns, and fabric.

Skulls picked up his current project. After a careful count, he resumed stitching the dark green leaves. He switched to brown for the branches, then a variety of pinks, reds, and yellow for the blossoms frequently checking his pattern.

“Skulls!” Racetrack peered in. “Oh, cool.”

“It was supposed to be your birthday present,” he complained.

AWWWWW....

I don't know what I think is sweeter - that Skulls was making it for her birthday or that Racetrack thought such a present would be so cool. :)

A nice hobby for Skulls. Great drabble.

Zarek, PG-13 for post-coital conversation

Date: 2011-01-03 02:25 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lorrainemarker.livejournal.com
Tom never anticipated having sex with Gaeta. If he’d thought about it all, he expected Gaeta to end up with Baltar and maybe for him to find a redheaded substitute for Laura Roslin. Destiny zigged when it should have zagged and he found himself with a post-coital Gaeta.

“What do you like to do when you’re not remaking the world?”

A curious, post-coital Gaeta.

“You mean besides this.” He stroked his hand along a bare hip.

“Yes, I mean besides sex.”

“Hmm, I used to like poetry.”

“Poetry?”

“‘When you are old and gray and full of sleep…’” he started.

Adama, no warnings

Date: 2011-01-04 02:33 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nvgvup.livejournal.com
It was a talent grown out of fascination and teen rebellion. One only shared with those he loved and trusted.

He had been honoured to do so after Starbuck tied the knot; smiled every time he saw his gift shared between her and Anders.

But his greatest work had been seen by him alone. His father had never let him get inked in the ways of his people but Bill Adama reveled in every stolen moment he spent tracing the work of his needle on Laura’s creamy skin.

A ring was the symbol of Caprica. Tuarons marked their love forever.

Aw, it's sweet to think that Adama made Starbuck and Anders' tattoo. What an interesting bond that would be between Adama and Roslin.

Gaeta/Sweet Eight , No Warnings

Date: 2011-01-04 04:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] geekbynight.livejournal.com
Eight was perched on his desk, her usual position these days, when Felix entered the office. The heel of her foot kept hitting the desk and her mouth was set in a frown.

“Felix,” She called without looking up, “Come help me find this word.”

He did, surprised she’d found his stash of crossword puzzles. It didn’t take him long to circle the final word, diagonal in the center.

She laughed,“Can’t believe I didn’t see it before.”

“Sometimes the clues are hiding in plain sight.” Felix muttered, sitting down.

Eight smiled at Felix for a moment before kissing him softly.

Male cylon, character suicide

Date: 2011-01-07 06:59 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] choc-n-roses.livejournal.com
My very first drabble :)

***

157 meters... He climbed onto the barrier. Blood pounded heavy in his head.
Sympathetic nervous system reacts, first effects of adrenaline...

An instant flood of emotions followed as he jumped off - gravity converted into abdominal sensation.
Cold air battered his sweat covered skin.

3... 2...

The subsequent dull thud remained without any physical reaction.

Gasping with the drowning feeling caused by the viscous mass in his lungs, he awoke within a body-warm ambiance.

„I might repeat myself, however, I think your interest in suicide methods is extremely sick.“

He left the tub and gave Cavil a shrug,

„Each to his own.“
